The overarching goal of the Bloomberg Anywhere redesign was to create an app that could bring the power of the desktop ‘terminal’ to service subscribers and enable business productivity and decision making, anytime, anywhere.
Background and Context
The iPhone design was a 6month UX timeline from analysis to design, evaluation and implementation support. The scope was to create an app of apps that would scale to support the ever-changing mobile landscape and sophistication of mobile users. The effort encompassed 12 features (apps) and major workflow redesign as well as a complete brand overhaul.

Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) is the latest release of Android OS, an open-sourced mobile operating platform. In addition to being shipped on real-world devices, it serves as a showcase that inspires and guides the creation of mobile applications world-wide. It is designed to adapt to many different form factors and device classes with small and large screen sizes. Ice Cream Sandwich achieves its ambitious user experience goals of ease of use and positive emotional engagement through well-thought-out interaction design, consistent and delightful visuals, the highly specialized interface typeface Roboto and well-placed, subtle transitions that reinforce a sense of place within the OS. The ICS user experience was created in a user-centered, iterative design process. Overarching design goals were set collaboratively, inspired by ethnographic observation and behavior analysis of a large number of mobile device users. The user experience was refined and validated through extensive usability testing. Design principles that were recently shared with the public Android design community emerged as part of this process. ICS has received much praise in the press for its ease of use and dramatic user experience improvements in comparison to previous Android releases.
Background and Context
A small design team created Ice Cream Sandwich, the next generation of Android’s mobile operating system. The Android OS touches the lives of the people who own the 300 million Android devices that have been activated world-wide. ICS was released to Open Source on Nov. 14, 2011 about a year after the previous major software releases called Gingerbread and Honeycomb. The project is of high complexity complex because it needs to be simultaneously versatile and simple to accommodate a wide range of hardware solutions. It needs to provide a usable framework for the creation of applications with a wide range of use cases and goals. It needs to be mindful of compatibility with previously developed Android applications. The ICS release constitutes a major user experience step in Android’s evolution.
Mill Touch is a large format multitouch experience showcasing over 1000 projects spanning 20 years. Transparency-switchable smartglass housed in a custom frame allows for borderless, full bleed projections. A fluid particle field serves as a celestial backdrop for all content. Users can explore the constellation of projects or use conventional methods of selection. Other unique interfaces include a before and after project lens, a free-floating, dockable search keyboard, and a lenticular video scrubber.
Background and Context
Large multitouch screens are becoming more common, but they are mostly housed in conventional frames and lack responsive feedback. Our focus was to create a bespoke installation that felt very natural to engage with. The breadth of the content proved to be a significant challenge from both a technical and design standpoint, needing to balance quantity with simplicity. We were careful not to upstage content, while enhancing the translucent properties of the screen. The project timeline was compressed between paying projects.

HBO/Huge: HBO GO Mobile Apps Best Cross-Platform Experience
HBO/Huge: HBO GO Mobile Apps Best Cross-Platform Experience
As content streaming began to expand heavily to mobile devices, HBO and Huge partnered to create HBO GO, a suite of applications that would allow users instant access to an extensive library of HBO content from their mobile devices. The Huge-designed HBO GO app harnesses the vibrant content of HBO to deliver a truly unique and seamless digital experience on the iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch and Android, Roku, Xbox 360 and Kinect.
Background and Context
HBO GO allows the network to better demonstrate value to their subscribers by providing them with the means to access HBO wherever and whenever they want, giving them complete control of their viewing experience. The main interface of the HBO GO app features a stunning, mosaic-like grid of captivating images from various HBO programs. The app allows users to begin watching the full-length content from within the initial experience, minimizing click-through and maximizing usability across the various devices. The display allows users to both view the entire breadth of content and easily immerse themselves in their desired selection. The app is free of charge and available to HBO subscribers through a participating television provider. HBO GO for iPad, iPod Touch and Android launched in April 2011, at a time when people were starting to think differently about how they consumed television. The development of HBO GO indicates a significant investment by HBO in embracing changing technology and evolving behaviors of their subscribers. For example, HBO GO recently launched a never-before-seen interactive viewing experience for Game of Thrones fans. The Game of Thrones interactive features allow viewers to engage with original content created exclusively for the service, such as commentary tracks, interviews, maps and storyboards for an even more immersive and exciting experience. Upon launch, the HBO GO mobile app made its way to the top-ranked free app in Apple’s App Store on its first day of release, received 1 million downloads within its first week and hit 3 million downloads within the first month of its release.

Tutorial Player is an iPad app that offers an interactive tutorial experience for learning how to use Adobe Photoshop. What is unique about Tutorial Player is that it creates an intelligent connection between a running instance of Photoshop (on the user’s deskop or laptop computer) and the tablet. Using this connection, Tutorial Player automatically stays in sync with the user by advancing the tutorial from one step to the next as the user completes the appropriate actions in Photoshop. Also, if the user gets stuck and needs help, Tutorial Player can automatically perform any step (e.g., execute a command, make a selection) in Photoshop. Adobe Tutorial Player is the first step in more advanced instructional content that is adaptive and can offer real-time assistance. To make it easy to author interactive tutorials, we have also created a plug-in for Adobe Photoshop called Tutorial Builder. With Tutorial Builder, users can automatically create step-by-step tutorials by just demonstrating the relevant actions in Photoshop.
Background and Context
This project started in 2009. We first developed the Tutorial Builder plug-in for Adobe Photoshop that allowed us to create step-by-step tutorials automatically. In October 2011, we released the plug-in on Adobe Labs. In June of 2011, we started developing the Tutorial Player iPad app. We had a first prototype in July but started a more focused development and design effort in November of 2011. In March 2012 we went through a redesign in order to improve the usability of Tutorial Player. We added the user tracking functionality in order to be able to highlight the current tutorial step. We released the app on April 30th, 2012.

It’s hard to imagine, but before the record player and the radio, only a tiny fraction of people used to listen to music. Sadly, today the art world isn’t much different from the music world 100 years ago, and its biggest players have no interest in that changing. We envision a world where a love for art is as common as a love for music, and where anyone can freely access all art via any Internet-connected device, from web, to mobile and touch.
Background and Context
Art.sy is more dream than project. It all started during Carter Cleveland’s senior year of college when he searched online to find art for his blank dorm room walls. Having grown up being dragged to museums and galleries by his art obsessed father, Carter had always been passionate about art. But academically he excelled in math, physics, and computer science. He saw an opportunity for technology to make the art world more accessible, so that more people might enjoy art as a common part of their lives in the same way that music and film play a common role in our lives today. Now 3 years later Art.sy employs 30 people in New York city and has forged partnerships with over 250 of the world’s leading galleries, museums, and artist estates making it the single greatest database of publicly (and legally!) available modern and contemporary art in history. And while Art.sy has come a long way since its college dorm roots, it is still just at the very beginning.
About the Applicant
Art.sy is a startup in New York city. Our mission is to make all the world’s art accessible to anyone for free.

SeatGeek: Event Page Ticket Interface Best Transactional Experience
We’re submitting our ticket search interface for consideration, as we feel that it is at the core of the SeatGeek user experience. We have created custom interactive maps for major venues across North America that allow us to map individual ticket listings down to the row level, and users can zoom in and pan around the map to explore the venue for the best ticket deals. We use a color-coded system that correlates with our Deal Score value algorithm to help fans tell at a quick glance which tickets are the best value in the stadium, and we have robust filtering and sorting tools that help users pare down a long list of tickets to only those which fit their exact criteria.
Background and Context
The current format of our event pages has evolved substantially since we first introduced them upon our site in late 2009, though we have consistently iterated and enhanced our maps to the point that as of today, we now have over 2000 unique event maps in our system — covering all major venues in North America.
About the Applicant
SeatGeek is a search engine that helps you find the best deals on tickets for concerts, theatre, and sporting events. We aggregate ticket listings from over 60 secondary market ticket websites and provide users with advanced tools and analytics in order to help them identify the best ticket values in the marketplace for their favorite events.

Lbi US for client Americans Elect: Pick a President, Not a Party
By hosting the first-ever online nomination for the presidency, Americans Elect is using our latest technologies to support our oldest values by giving every American an equal say in nominating a president. To get there, we’re doing two key things. First, we’re creating a startup with no brand recognition and zero users and—in the span of less than a year—scaling up to accommodate millions. Second, we’re building out a site with the ability to let voters determine the issues that matter most to them, matching them with candidates who share their views, and ultimately letting them securely nominate a ticket for the president via the Internet.
Background and Context
The project had less than a year to create a site that combined features and functionality from anything to dating site to a question-and-answer forum to a voter registration system, all of which that had bank-level security, and all of it with the purpose of creating a new way to elect a President of the United States.

In a bold move, MTA (Maryland Transit Administration) envisioned how well-crafted interactive kiosks could motivate rail car maintenance mechanics to do their jobs in a more efficient and effective way. They recognized that to sustain user engagement, the units had to be special, so they commissioned ScreenPlay InterActive (SPIA) to build custom software that would transform the ruggedized 46” touch screen units into iPad-like devices.
Background and Context
As the first of it’s kind in the public transportation industry, there were no models to extract use cases from. The project was the brainchild of a Director with a vision to bring his agency into current/future IT interaction standards. His openness made the UX/UI portion a pleasure to iterate/develop. However, due to departmental standards imposed upon us, we had to work in an outdated OS. So, executing the behind-the-scenes technology was very involved, but still quite rewarding to pull off. It was executed in two stages in over a year’s time.

Studio Akko/Formant Studios: BKIN Wayfinding System
The BKIN (“beacon”) Wayfinding System is a collaboration between a user experience designer and an industrial designer to create a hybrid physical/digital experience in the form of a low-cost, low impact network of information points designed for remote areas such as parks and rural locations with little or no cell reception. At a distance, it serves as an enhanced mile marker, while up close it provides maps, guides, urgent updates, and communication between units for safety.
Background and Context
The project came about when an interaction designer and an industrial designer, both passionate about the outdoors, saw a number of opportunities in recent news – from funding cuts in public parks to communication breakdown in natural disasters – that revealed a lack of low-tech infrastructure to provide useful and timely information. Our preliminary research led to the discovery of three core problems in the outdoor context around discovery, information and communication barriers in remote places, and these three goals pointed us to the need to create a low cost, easy to use, information and communication system that had minimal aesthetic and environmental impact on its surroundings. The self-funded and self-initiated project kicked off in early summer of 2011 with research into the domain and after a series of agile concept validation and iterative design rounds, we created the preliminary concept for the BKIN in July of 2011. As our concept evolved, we brought in technologists to help better understand opportunities defined by the intricacies of the outdoor context. To validate the concept’s commercial and social value as well as seek potential sources of co-sponsorship / R&D funding, our team presented this concept to organizations to gather feedback and refine the product concept. In doing so, we are discovering that applications for the product concept beyond the outdoor context, such as museums, convention centers, hospitals and event-based scenarios such as music festivals, would benefit from an easy to install and maintain local mesh network that provides discovery, information, and communication without requiring a mobile device in hand. While this product is currently complete as a concept, we are currently in the planning stages of piloting a limited production full scale series of prototypes to test and refine the core offering of a true BKIN system in a non-lab environment in order to study its large scale potential and challenges. Our goal is to have a BKIN Wayfinding System – multiple units with fully functional interface and backend communicating over the wireless mesh – installed and operational within the coming year.
