In late 2014, we started working on the Fidelity Mobile® for Apple Watch app. We knew the watch was coming to the public marketplace sometime in early 2015 but we didn’t know when. We put together a very small team – business, design and technology with minimal management involvement. The team was enabled to create, design and develop our very first app for the smallest form factor for mobile technology. With some specs from Apple, we were limited as to how the app would look, function and perform. The team went to a local retailer in Boston and had a 3-D printer replicate what the anticipated screen size and band would look like. From there, they were able to test and respond to how the app would appear and work while on a wrist. Plus they needed to figure out how to leverage the haptic technology that would alert a wearer of the watch.

From there, the goal was for seamless integration with our iPhone® App and how the two would work together.

Key functionality we launched with:

· Real-time quotes and domestic and international market data

· Market movers – the US markets’ most active equities as well as the day’s biggest gainers and losers

· Alerts for Fidelity orders and price triggers via push alerts and the haptic sensors

Since, we’ve added:

· Ability to place a trade or get a quote quickly and conveniently from your price trigger notifications

· Charts for stock, ETF, and index quotes and easily swipe the chart to change from a 1-day to a 30-day display.

Why this project is worthy of a UX Award:

In early March, Fidelity Investments was one of the first to announce in a press release that our app would be ready when Apple Watch hit stores on April 24th. And we were one of the first financial services companies in our industry to do just that. We built our app from the ground up for the watch and our design lives up to Apple’s sleek aesthetic design and cutting edge technology that lets our customers stay on top of the markets and their investments with a simple twist of the wrist. Since our initial launch, we’ve added new features and continue to see an increase in adoption and customer usage. On April 10th, Money Magazine named Fidelity as one of the top 15 “cool” financial apps for the Apple Watch:

Our landing page on Fidelity.com offers an Apple gift card incentive to open and fund a new account. This has been one of our most successful landing zones as 160 new accounts have been opened and we’re able to clearly attribute a return on investment (ROI).

On September 11th, at the New Product & Tech awards Ceremony in San Francisco, we were recognized as a GOLD STEVIE WINNER from the American Business Awards(SM) for Integrated Mobile Experience of the Year:
