LightUp is an energy redistribution service that translates people’s personal savings into indirect donations

Energy is clearly the fuel that drives progress of any place in the world. While the developed areas constantly dwell on how to optimize the resources better everyday, reality is there are still many inhabited places that yet do not have even basic access to the most critical energy resources like electricity. Along with Public communities, personal donations play a huge role in helping raise the needed funds for projects that help bridge this gap. Often such donors do not get to see where and how they exactly made a difference. There is no visible feedback to their valuable contribution. That’s where interaction makes a difference. LightUp is an interactive fundraising coin jar that firstly encourages personal savings and then also allows people to contribute a part of their savings towards the cause. The system allows them to track in real-time exactly how many units of electricity they helped generate. Another visible reward is the jar lights up for 10 mins. each time they drop a coin. The target audience is self-sufficient earning people from developed countries willing to make a difference in society by shelling a percentage of their personal savings. It is for people who are concerned and want to take responsibility for the state of humanity in the world. To avail the service of Light up, a user merely needs to register through an online platform. Every registered user is then provided with a physical jar to make savings on periodical basis. Users can save coins in these jars. Every time a coin is dropped in it, as a response the jar lights up for 10 minutes. The drop of a coin each time also triggers a parallel transaction where a certain sum of money is transferred from the user’s account to LightUps’s Account. While registering, LightUp will also create a personal PayPal account for its users. This PayPal account is linked to the merchant PayPal account of LightUp. The user gets to decide the unit of money that can be debited each time while registering. Every time users put coins in the LightUp jar, they will also receive immediate feedbacks such as SMS, email or Facebook notification as per user’s preferences. These feedbacks will inform users on how their donation is being used for specific social projects and how they have helped make a real difference.

Why this project is worthy of a UX Award:

LightUp is a concept built on a long since existing and cherished practice of collecting and saving coins in a jar. The reward and encouragement it gives a user to save is still charming and worth adopting. By allowing a user to extend his jar savings towards a cause that will make a tangible difference elsewhere enhances the traditional benefit of the habit manifolds. The technology while intelligent is kept fairly invisible. What still signifies the enhanced experience and gives the user delight is the lighting up of the jar for a few minutes every time a coin is dropped. If we had to the measure user experience on the below parameters, we believe Light Up lives up to the enrichment it promises in a simple and unobtrusive way. a)      Don’t have the user learn a new action or behavior. b)     Add more value to an activity c)      Keep technology invisible d)      Cause delight by giving user a feedback
