Our UX team helped solve the challenge of redesigning software on an entirely new platform w/ 1000s of users of whom have used it for years.

Who: Quorum makes innovative software for hydrocarbon and energy business management. We’re advancing the industry with a platform of integrated solutions proven to drive customer profit throughout the energy value chain.

When/Where/Why: When our agency was approached in 2015 with the challenge of redesigning Quorum's 30+ legacy Windows applications, because of customer demand, into market-leading, innovative, responsive web-based software, we knew that we had to change the mindset of Quorum's organization. Since they are mainly made up of large, highly-skilled development teams, their approach had always been a feature-centric which we helped change to a user-centric organization.

How: We integrated our UX process, Visual design and Front-end development to work efficiently with their teams, which led to our process being easily repeated by their product teams so that it would have the maximum impact in the shortest time. We opened their eyes to their users’ empathy among their product teams through real user persona creation, understanding their workflows as well as their goals and pain points, in order to help drive the design process more effectively. We also helped create online live style and pattern guide, which included UX guidelines, Visual UI details and Front-end coding snippets to help inform patterns from the 'Atomic' to the Macro levels. We are constantly helping facilitate the importance of getting user feedback as there are many cognitive biases that come with users who's been accustomed to the same interface for years as well as new users in high turnover positions.

Why this project is worthy of a UX Award:

Enterprise software has always been behind-the-curve when it comes to implementing the best user experience processes and pushing the visual aesthetic boundaries. The daunting challenge of redesigning software on an entirely new platform with thousands of users of whom have used it for 10+ years and are resistant to change, makes design innovation extremely difficult for Enterprise software companies. When our agency was approached with the challenge of redesigning Quorum's 30+ legacy Windows applications into market-leading, innovative, responsive web-based software, we knew that we had to change the mindset of Quorum's organization from a feature-centric to a user-centric one. Our lean and mean "UX Swat" team faced the challenges by integrating our UX process to work efficiently with their teams, which led to our process being easily repeated by their product teams so that it would have the maximum impact in the shortest time. We opened their eyes to their users’ empathy among their product teams through real user persona creation, understanding their workflows as well as their goals and pain points, in order to help drive the design process more effectively. Even though their Product managers were experienced users, incorrect assumptions of workflow were still made. This was witnessed when we heard the user feedback after facilitating usability testing with actual clients early in the process, which resulted in design improvements prior to launch. As we continue to iterate on our designs, we are reducing the learning curve by improving the onboarding experience for new users and integrating an online help system with customer support to help when problems arise. We are also adding animation (with purpose) to create more depth with the experience. This will give users a better sense of the expected behavior of the interface and clearer transitions in the workflow.
